990 Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up (1972)

Studio Album - Blues Rock

About the Act:

Bonnie Raitt is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. Her career started in 1971 and is still going. She is most associated with Blues, Roots and America. Her peak of success came in the late 80s/early 90s. She has released 17 studio albums.

About the Album:

This is Bonnie's second album. Although it received good critical reviews, it was not very successful commercially. Three of the ten songs were written by Bonnie, and the others are covers, but not of well-known songs.

My History with this Album:

None

Review:

I always associated the name Bonnie Raitt with country music, but I was wrong, she is definitely more of a blues act. This album has a variety of styles though, from straight-up blues to more folky tracks, that remind me of James Taylor, to the New Orleans brass band jazz.  Bonnie's voice is quite clear and high, and does sound a little country at times. Her voice also reminds me of Carole King on Tapestry.  It's a really nice vocal performance, and quite versatile and varied. There are a lot of musicians involved, so although I know that Bonnie is playing guitars, there are several other guitarists, so I'm not sure which bits I should be impressed at for being her.  The production is a bit busy at times, with instruments tripping over each other a little, but that does impart a feeling of energy to the proceedings.

I like it, it is a good album, this is definitely going into the list of things to get a copy of. If you are a fan of Carole King and/or James Taylor then you are likely to like this quite a lot.

7.5/10
