978 Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man (1988)

Studio Album - Folk Rock

About the Act:

Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer and songwriter known for his deep, gravelly voice and often acerbic lyrics. His songs tend towards the darker side of life, but he has written songs about a wide range of subjects including religion, politics, isolation, depression, sexuality, loss, death and romance. His career spanned 1955 to 2016, in which time he produced 15 studio albums. His most famous song was "Hallelujah" which is one of the most covered songs ever.

About the Album:

This was Cohen's 8th studio album, and one which brought him major success.

My History with this Album:

I know some of the songs. I don't remember having a copy of it, but it is possible that I had a cassette copy for a while.

Review:

So, I don't know if you know anything about Leonard Cohen. He has a uniquely deep voice and a particular skill with poetic, enigmatic and evocative lyrics. He is best known as a kind of underground folk singer for people who like things on the depressing side. On this album, his singing is at it's peak in expression, dripping with pathos. The thing that is weird is that the backing is like 80s pop, synthy and often incongruously upbeat. It takes a little getting used to, but in a strange way it work. There's some great use of backing singers also.

The songs are great, laden with meaning and implied meaning, and dark humour. His voice is low and gravelly, and he kind of slides around the note in a way that works very well. To be honest, I love it, it's a great listen.
