985 Eurythmics - Touch (1983)

Studio Album - Synth-Pop

About the Act:

Eurythmics were a British Pop Duo, consisting of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Their main period of existence was 1980-1990 during which they produced eight studio albums. They have had a couple of reunions and one more album since.  Dave and Annie had been together in the band The Tourists, before they decided to break out on their own. They initially produced a brand of synth-pop which captured the public imagination, before moving into a more pop-rock/art rock kind of area. They managed to combine popular appeal and artistic authenticity.

About the Album:

This was the third studio album by the Eurythmics, the second to be very successful, and the last to be very synth-pop based. Most of the music was performed by Dave Stewart with some guests, and some instruments by Annie Lennox. There were three hit singles from this album, "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Who's That Girl" and "Right By Your Side".

My History with this Album:

I find it hard to believe that I didn't have a copy of this album at one point, as I have had most of their albums, but apart from the hits, I don't remember the tracks.

Review:

This is very synth-based pop, and synths at the time were quite distinctive in their sound. It sounds mostly blippy and beepy, with occasional paddy sounds. Annie Lennox has a brilliant and distinctive voice, which is used to great effect, and if you don't know what she sounds like, you must have been living under some kind of rock. I hope it is a nice rock, with colourful swirls and exciting patterns.  The three singles from the album are very recognisable, and the other tracks are pretty much in a similar vein. The whole thing is very listenable, nicely produced and musically interesting. Although it's synthy and poppy it doesn't have the cloying banality of most synth-pop. I would say all in all I like it, and not just because of nostalgia for the eighties.
