Big Star were an American Rock band from Memphis Tennessee. They existed from 1971-75 and then from 1993-2010. They have had 4 studio albums. They were apparently influential, but I hadn't heard of them.


About the Album:

This was their first album. It was well received by the critics but had poor distribution so didn't sell well.

Review:

Take a pinch of this, and a pinch of that, and, well, so much of music can be described as "that bit sounds like such and such, and that bit sounds like somebody else" - but I guess that if you know the references it can help you get the idea. There's a bit of the Beatles, a bit of The Byrds, a bit even of Led Zep. The band take it in turns to sing. Some of the songs are rocky, some are more acoustic numbers. The songs are not fluff, but not instant winners either. There are some moderately interesting words, some moderately interesting music, and while it's maybe better than average, it doesn't strike me as one of the best 1000 albums ever. It may be that once again, lack of familiarity, combined with the phenomenal stuff that was happening in Britain at the time, make me a little jaded. I guess on the plus side, it has an honest feel to it, and is not over-produced.

In the mid-80s he was in a Spanish/English rockabilly group called Hot Pants. In 1987, with his brother and cousin he founded the band Mano Negra, combining punk and world music influences and playing on the Paris Metro. This band took off and had 4 studio albums. In 1995 Manu "went solo", forming the band Radio Bemba Sound System to be his backing band. The punk elements were less prominent, but he started to make music that "replicates the sound of street music and bar scenes from a variety of cultures". He has been really popular in parts of Europe.  About the Album: This album was Manu Chao's second studio album as a "solo" artist. He was a film-maker, occultist, and eccentric. About the Album: Harry Smith had a collection of early 78rpm records of various "folk" styles dated from 1927 when such things first started to be commercially available to 1932 when the Great Depression put a stop to the sales of folk records. In 1947 he approached a label, Folkway Records, about releasing a collection of them transferred onto LPs.
