Review:
Spoiler: I liked it.
I've not come across Peter Wolf before. This is a shame, but I have now and that makes me glad. This is exactly why I have undertaken this mammoth undertaking, to discover new gems.
It's not really Blues Rock. Well, some songs are, but there is a right old mixture of styles here, Blues, Country, Latin Rock, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass.... Let's get referential, in case my references hit your awareness: I can hear shades of JJ Cale, The Blues Brothers, Ry Cooder, Santana, and even Jools Holland in here. It's a right old melting pot. Most of the songs are originals, with a few covers thrown in. I especially like "Homework" but most of the tracks are stylistically up my street, with the exception of "Nothin' But The Wheel" which is too Country for me, There are some interesting lyrics at times, and it is a strong collection of songs.
The production and instrumentation is strong, there is a lot going on a times, and I love the inclusion of mandolin, and of rock organ at times, oh and some truly awesome backing vocals (I appreciate good backing vocals, they can really lift a song). The playing is excellent throughout.
The overall collection makes a good album. I would recommend this for anyone who likes the Blues Rock kind of stuff, like Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, and so on, with a strong Americana feel to it. Stick it on, and then imagine you are on a riverboat floating down the Mississippi.
