Animal Collective are a group of experimental musicians from Baltimore. They have been experimenting since 2003 and have published their results in the form of 10 studio albums, 10 EPs, 5 live albums, 2 visual albums and one soundtrack. The name is a blanket to cover works by the whole group or by any sub-set of the group.

This was their eighth studio album. It features multi-layered vocal harmonies and samples.

Review:

This album is experimental pop, I am going to respond with an experimental review.


It goes jingle-jangle in my ears, these samples, with fast beaty beats and repetitive repetitive repetitive in a washy through your ears in one and back out the same because it bounces off my brain. It is cornflakes for the soul, with the smooth sloshing milk of multitracked vocals and reverberberberberation. It is a dream, not-quite remembered as you wake, and not one of dread, but not one where you curse the morning either. It is chicken soup with slightly too much salt and no croutons. The words are bits of pasta , slipping in without needing to be chewed, almost un-noticed in the soupy texture. It is the hum of a harmonic machine bouncing off the hard walls of the textile factory, producing polysynthetic smooth fabric like slightly lumpy custard. It is yellow, through and through.

It is the Beach Boys stuck at the bottom of a well. I drew up a bucketful but it was too much, a cupful was enough, so I spat the rest out. It's a reheated pizza dipped in too much salad cream. It's Paul Simon's pony.

Over-pretentious and hard to understand.... do I mean the album or this review?
