759 Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap (1998)

Studio Album - Chamber Pop

About the Act:

Belle & Sebastian are a band from Glasgow, who have existed since 1996. They are quite a big band with 7 members (and also 3 ex-members). They have pushed out 10 albums. Their name is from a French novel Belle et Sebastien.

About the Album:

This was their third album.

My History with this Album:

None

Review:

It's kind of airy, poppy, folky, indie, dreamy stuff. Musically it's gentle and understated like floating down a river in a rowing boat on a sunny day. I would describe it as acoustic except there are synths in there. The drums are often quite understated and the general feeling is of capturing a moment, a bit of a lazy jam. The singing is quite quiet, but quite prominent in the mix which gives it more of that intimate feel. It's easy to hear the words.

The songs are about all sorts of things, some more obvious than others. I particularly like the spoken word track about dreaming of travelling to Mars. There's stuff about people, stuff about relationships, it's not typical, and more eclectic I guess. I like Isobel Campbell's voice (only on a few tracks) - she reminds me a little of Kirsty MacColl.

And that's about it really. I quite liked it.
